SYNOPSIS

A chance encounter in Venice, maybe a vision: a woman, her eyes filled with sorrow.
Davide can't forget that woman. He paints portraits of her, he dreams of her, he can even hear her voice... That woman rapidly becomes a haunting presence in his life, a whirlwind of images, sounds and memories he doesn't recognize, a mysterious melody… Davide sinks into a hallucinatory state which rapidly shatters his perception of himself, and compels him to search in anguish into a past of which he isn't aware. A strong and intense love bond surfaces from the past: a bond brutally severed by the war, but never ceased. Now Davide knows. Torna ad inizio pagina - Back

THE ORIGIN

We can detect, in the project La Giostra, something visionary. With "visionary" we refer to Luigi Alberton's ability to envision, to his long-sightedness, to his determination to fulfil his dreams. Luigi Alberton has kept the script of La Giostra in a drawer for ten years. He wrote it in one go, just like a "vision", in 2000 during a solitary journey. The story was set in 2010: he "foresaw" that in ten years' time technological progress would provide him with the equipment he needed. He even "saw" his house (which at that time was still under construction) as a set for La Giostra… But the most "visionary" aspect of this project is Alberton's firm belief in a working method which, being based on partaking and on the sharing of values and goals, defies the logic of the marketplace. All his "visions" proved to be right. In ten years, technology has progressed, Alberton's research into art has ripened and its values have found expression in the project Immaginario Sonoro… The "vision" has now become true.Torna ad inizio pagina - Back

THE MESSAGES OF THE FILM

Through Davide's story, the film La Giostra gives voice to a profound and common need: the necessity of becoming aware of our past, and of learning how to recognize it in our present, as a means towards deeper understanding of life. More implicit are the other messages of this film: the role of dreams as privileged channels to get in touch with our inner self; the role of women as bearers of life values and as resilient change-makers, both on a personal and on a social base; the role of art as a means towards deeper knowledge and evolution. Last but not least, we like to reaffirm that our team-work approach based on partaking and on the sharing of values and goals is in itself a positive message: a social model, and a feasible one.Torna ad inizio pagina - Back

THE TITLE

La Giostra (The Merry-Go-Round, in English) suggests a variety of images: the cycles of life, the recurring cycle of history, the games of destiny, the circle as a symbol for perfection, the spiral development of any path towards evolution… The very development of the film is in itself "circular": it is built on the philosophical principle of thesis-antithesis-synthesis. Sotto voce, the movements of the camera hint at the circular movements of the merry-go-round.Torna ad inizio pagina - Back

RESEARCH AND NARRATIVE STYLE: A FILM IN SIX SHORTS

La Giostra is formed by six short films in a sequence. Each short has its own internal unity, but the six of them are indissolubly tied together by subtle links and sound reverberations. La Giostra manifests the artistic values of Immaginario Sonoro (Aural Imagination), centre for research into art founded in 2007 by Luigi Alberton. These values are best expressed through the distinctive features of these short films: search for essence and synthesis, multiple layers of meaning, narrative use of light and sound, circularity, continuity between past and present. In particular, the film explores the infinite potentials of sound as a powerful means to enhance in the viewers all their faculties of perception. Sound becomes a "character" in the film and a fundamental vehicle of meaning.Torna ad inizio pagina - Back

DIGITAL REFLEX CAMERAS: AN EXPERIMENTAL FILM

In 2009 La Giostra becomes one of the first experimentation labs in which a whole film is shot in Full HD using exclusively digital reflex cameras. For the first time, digital technology can fully replace a professional movie camera with a digital camera (Canon EOS 5D Mark II), maintaining the same quality of shooting, but at affordable costs. And this is a small revolution for independent filmmaking.Torna ad inizio pagina - Back

AN INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION

The short film La Giostra is an independent production. The project is low-budget and non-profit. La Giostra was published by Immaginario Sonoro, centre for research into art. The film was produced by Alberton Consulting, a communication company supporting all the activities and projects of Immaginario Sonoro.

For the author, the main advantage of having no constraints determined by the need for an economic return was total freedom of action and choice in his search for quality. But this project would have never come to life without the participation of friends, technicians, creatives and artists who – sharing the values of Immaginario Sonoro and La Giostra – have participated in the project with generosity and enthusiasm, giving ideas, help and time.Torna ad inizio pagina - Back

AROUND THE FILM: ART GENERATES ART

We believe that art can generate new forms of art, and the film La Giostra is proof thereof. In fact, other independent artistic projects have originated from the film: a book on the making ot the film, a music CD (Drago) and a series of communication initiatives aimed at promoting the art of Cesare Sartori, sculptor, ceramist, and painter. "The book of the film", halfway between documentation and diary, tells a photographic story of how this visionary project could become a reality. Sartori's paintings and works of art are interwoven in the plot from the very first scene, and they offer not only their beauty but also a fundamental key to understanding the protagonist's psychology. The music project Drago assembles the three songs in the film with three other pieces and with some of Sartori's paintings, to explore the role of women in a prospect of change. (Music and lyrics: Luigi Alberton; voice: Elisa Maso.) So, thanks to the film La Giostra, independent areas of research (into music and sound, into painting and art) have met and merged and have found common paths.Torna ad inizio pagina - Back

THE FILMMAKER

Luigi Alberton is an "explorer into art". He has dedicated his artistic and professional life to research: into music and sound (Esehcrut), into film-making and multimedia projects (Blindness, Evocation, The Eye of Masaccio, Flash), into philosophy (Ecofoglia) and communication (Immaginario Sonoro). In the project La Giostra, Luigi Alberton has signed film direction, script and screenplay, production, editing, music and sound effects. Torna ad inizio pagina - Back
